Heat Pumps Research for SMV

As per the Annual Meeting on May 23, 2026 the Board will be researching the obstacles, benefits, and requirements for allowing Owners to install Heat Pumps. As we have progress we will update this web page. Owners can add comments at the bottom of the page.

What Is a Heat Pump and How Does It Work?

A heat pump is a device that transfers heat from one place to another using electricity. Unlike conventional heaters that generate heat by burning fuel or using electric resistance, heat pumps move existing heat from the air, ground, or water into your home. This process makes them highly efficient because they use less energy to move heat than to create it.

There are three main types of heat pumps:

  • Air-source heat pumps: Extract heat from the outside air.

  • Ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps: Use the stable temperature of the ground.

  • Water-source heat pumps: Draw heat from a nearby water source.

During warmer months, heat pumps can reverse their operation to cool your home, making them versatile for year-round climate control.
